Title: Negative Space
Size: 15.1cm X 23cm
Month of completion:November
Medium:Ink on paper
Exhibition Text: This piece was based off of the art from the German Expressionism movement. The theme behind it was censorship. I intended to use negative and positive space to express the effects of censorship on people. The woman's eyes, lips, and heart were left as negative space to show that censorship affects what people see and can say as well as affecting the emotions/opinions that people are allowed to express.

We had to do this piece through a block print. The overall process of block printing sounded a lot easier then it actually was. Everything that needed to be negative space had to be scooped out with these little tools, so getting thin lines wasn't all that doable. Then there was actually making the prints, getting the ink on was easy but then you had to keep pressing the paper on to the carving which took a long time, even after a few tries I still didn't get a fully black print.
The theme I chose to use for this was censorship. I tried to portray the effects of censorship using the positive and negative space. The mouth and heart were carved out because censorship mainly takes away what people are allowed to say, thus taking a lot of the spirit or "heart" of their message. The eyes were also carved out because censorship takes way what everyone else is allowed to see. |

This piece was based of German expressionism artist Kathe Kollwitz. Kathe used positive and negative space in her carvings to portray strong messages of emotion.
Reflection.
I think I did a better job in this piece than others in portraying a message. But the piece itself I don't think turned out that well, the carving doesn't look good, the lines and shapes are not clean or even, and i was not able to get a clean, fully black print. So although it turned out alright i don't think that this piece as a whole went well.
