Title: The Gears of Milwaukee
Size: 21.17 cm X 31.75 cm
Medium: Digital drawing
Month of Completion: November
Exhibition text: This piece was intended to show off the main characteristics of Milwaukee while at the same time maintaining a simplistic modern design. I used two basic colors, blue and gray, to keep the piece from clashing within the two components. The main portion of the piece is two smooth and cropped gears that give nice contrast with the blue background. The secondary component of the piece is the background done in a blue so it could be easily connotated with Lake Michigan. The stylization of the piece was based off of Lucian Bernhard's smooth logos.

Going off of that I changed the design, zoomed out, got ride of the outlines, and made everything smooth and even. The out come was overall pleasing to me.
I used the gears as a representative of industry and the blue for the lake. But i still wanted it better so I made the blue darker so it would be closer to the actual color of the lake. The third coloring of it I tried to use a yellow like the Brewers have, but the yellow for gears didn't look all that good so I just stopped trying to find a better color combination and stayed with the dark blue and gray. Reflection: I think that it turned out okay, it's not perfectly smooth, I messed up some of the curves while changing colors the first time. The overall evenness off the gear looks okay to me though. I think that I made a good choice in going for a simplistic style as flag designs aren't meant to be over complicated. |
I did this using Paint which is a program that I'm used to using, so although it was time consuming I under stood what was going on. My first idea was to do a very close up of two gears making a diagonal across the page. I did a sketch for it and a rough draft in paint, but it wasn't very distinguishable what I intended it to be, so it got scraped. So I decided to look at some other works to find inspiration.
Lucian Bernhard created the Priester advertisement in 1906. It was simplistic with good coloring, recommended traits of a flag. |
ACT Answers:
1)The similarity between Bernhards work and mine is primarily in the simple forms and the was both used a simplefied design on a flat background to highlight the focal point.
2)I mean Bernhard had it right in going back to the simple designs, doing this highlighted where the attention was supposed to be and kept meanings simpler.
3) I found out on how this ad design that Bernhard made made a new wave of simplicity in advertising and i also learned the benefits of simplicity in a work.
4) This piece was based of off my city and the idea behind it was on how our natural resource of having the lake near use helped build industry in the beginning.
5)Well inferences had to made on how to transfer his simplicity into mine and how the design could be simple but still carry meaning.
