Title: Lost soul
Size: 12.5cm X 11cm
Medium: clay
Month of completion: April
Exhibition text:This piece was supposed to show a man losing his soul. The soul is something that a lot of people consider sacred and so losing that is kind of a big deal. I based it off of the piece scream by Edvard Munch, trying to emulate the way that the man was screaming and the emotion it created. The piece was done using clay and was left unglazed after firing.

Process: This piece is made out of clay so the process began with running dray and wet clay through the pug mill. After having done that I made a solid rectangle with the clay, the rectangle was then carved into to form the torso and head. The head and body then got hollowed out to prevent the piece from exploding in the kiln. The arms of the price were just rolled out and slipped on to the torso, but i was worried about those blowing of in the kiln as well so i used a tool to make small incisions along the undersides of the arms to insure it didn't. The hardest part in this piece was just making sure everything was smoothed out like I wanted it to be, because this was supposed to represent like a pure form

Meaning/Inspiration: This piece was inspired by Edvard Munch's "The Scream". This is because I found that the emotion expressed during that piece is very strong and that's something I wanted to get across. The meaning behind this piece is that our meat prisons A.K.A. bodies are home to souls and the soul is something a lot of people consider sacred. In this piece I wanted to look at someone losing this soul and how there's like a lot of unnecessary deaths today, because of that the man has a very large hole in his chest and although he has no detailed facial features you can still see lot of emotion in the way he is screaming.

Reflection; I like the way this piece turned out actually, It portrays emotion well maintaining a non descript personality because of the plain face and un-glazed color. Throughout making this piece although I was already fairly familiar with clay I gained a new skill as I had never had to use a pug mill before but in this time i had to process my own clay. I also focused a lot more on smoothing the piece out that in prior pieces which was pretty cool. Ultimately I'd say this piece is a success, i'm just really proud it didn't blow up. This piece also had some failures as well like I wasn't able to create the visualization of him losing his soul so to everyone else it probbly just looks like a screaming guy.
ACT answers;
1)Even though Munch's work is a painting and this is a sculpture the inspiration is still very clear in the subject mater. a very pale human form screaming with jaw unhinged.
2)I enjoy Munch's piece, the high contrast that makes the form stand out also his brush work and the way the background colors go together but still remain distinct from each other.
3) In the process of looking at the piece i had to look at the ideas of what the piece was about, whether it was excitement, fear, or hopelessness that caused the scream. In this i concluded that it was more focused on fear based on the color composition in the background.
4)The central idea i was looking at was the idea of human souls and what value they have. represented by a man screaming at the loss of his soul in the process of death.
5)I drew conclusions in research based on the colors used as well as the brushwork that Munch used to better understand the meaning of his work.
