Title: Natures light
Size: 22 cm X 21 cm
Medium: plastic assemblage
Month of completion: April
Exhibition text: In this piece i was trying to showcase parallels between the industrialized world and nature. For it I made I figure meant to represent a jellyfish and put it in a position where it could be interpreted as a lamp. That was to show the way industry mimics nature and there are parallels between the two even though they are very different and often considered opposites. This piece was based off of the Tiffany lamps in the art nouveau period.

.This piece was based off of the lamps Tiffany made during the art nouveau period, i wanted to have these reflective pieces segmented and to really mimic both the lamps as well as jelly fish.
The purpose was to combine organic and industrial forms and well doing that I also wanted to look at the parallels between the two and how industry is similar to nature. This can be seen because both the lamp and jelly fish have the same form and emit light.
I made this piece using broken pieces of CD's and gluing them together to form the bowl shape. Working with the CD's was difficult because they didn't shatter like I wanted them to and the reflective portion of the CD that i was trying to use isn't actually attached to the plastic but is a really thin layer that kept falling off of portions and flaking off of the corners. Forming the shape was also an issue because I ended up with two curved portions that when attached didn't form a neat circle. The stand was easy to make but hard to attach in a way where the form was even and wouldn't fall because the form is so fragile.

Reflection:I actually like the way this piece turned out, It's not how i imagined it but it looks okay. The piece looks how it's supposed to kinda like a lamp kinda like a jelly fish and that's good. I really like the way that it turned out because the reflective material always gives off some form of color and because the bottom of the base is reflective as well you can see the underside of the form which is pretty cool.
ACT Answers:
1) The Tiffany lamps effect on my work can be seen mainly in the form it took but also in the segmented pieces in it.
2)I think the lamps are cool and they show how ornate things were made to be in that time period. I really like how the glass partitions will hold light in some places and let it pass through in others depending on what part of the design it is.
3)Well I made the generalization about how ornate things were made to be in that time period and even simple objects had to fit into the mold of that. That caused the highly designed stained glass lamps that Tiffany made.
4)Well the theme of this work is on combinations or conflicts of nature and industry. In that I focused on the way industry mimics things that exist in nature, by using the form of a jellyfish which emits light as part of a lamps form.
5)Inferences had to be made in my research on the way the forms would combine and inferences on why Tiffany made such ornate designs.
