Title: Beautiful smiles
Size: 30.48cm X 60.96cm
Medium: Acrylic on canvas
Month of completion: November
Exhibition text: This painting was supposed to mimic the style of baroque artists. it was intended to showcase ideals of beauty and how that in the more modern sense beauty is related to happiness rather than the more physical aspects. So I used my sister as a model for the painting to highlight how she's the most beautiful when she's happy. Which is different from the baroque movement which was more focused on only physical beauty.

Journal Writings:
Last year I had issues with blending acrylic paint so I tried to work on that in this piece. I found that acrylic paint can dry very rapidly so using water on the piece helped compact the drying speed and actually blending the colours to gain a high contrast but natural shadowing. It worked well on the shirt because the shadowing was in a simpler pattern the pants didn't turn out as well because of the awkward angle of her legs. I redid the pants to have less drastic contrast that way I could better |

blend the colours. The skin tone started off as too dark and a bit to red as I was comparing it to my skin tone, luckily my sister put up with me doing swatches on her arm to get an accurate match.
process:
1.)It starts like any painting with stretching the canvas, i chose to make a two by one foot canvas because that mimics the dimensions of the photo I worked with. stretching canvases is generally simple so because i have that mindset I messed it up. There;s a small hole in the canvas on the right hand side that i didn't notice until
2.) Gessoing is always horrid because that will make the canvas tighten and it drys quickly gesso is pure panic where you're pouring it on the canvas trying to cover everything as quickly as possible but you cant put on to much or it gets all over the floor, over all not fun.
3.) I chose to do a green background because the panel I was basing the piece off of was focused on like the times of day. and then instead of the sunflowers i used ponnsinettias and latter petunias.
4.)Once the border had been laid out I put down base coats for all of the colours, I only slightly modified the colour for the base blue and the red was just straight. The hardest colour to blend was my sisters skin tone, shes so pale, so I started off with matching the colour to my skin tone and then adding white until it matched her skin.
5.) Blending the shirt came next, what i did was I mixed in yellow and trace amounts of black to the base read. This made the colour brighter so I could use it as the highlight. For the Shadow I put down a fresh coat of red and added black to it so I could blend in the colours.
6.) The next part of the process was outlining the skin with a dark orangery brown colour like Mucha did. and using a darker skin tone to do the low-lights on my sister.
7.) Painting the hair consisted of using a base coat that was a few shades darker than my sisters skin tone, for the hair very careful brush strokes have to be used to avoid ruining the torso that I had already painted.

Inspiration: I based this piece off of Alphonse Mucha's work "The brightness of day" from his times of day series. Mucha was well known for his advertisements as well as his work in series. One of the series covered the times of day. his work was focused on physical beauty and in most of his work portraying a story. Flowers were a focal point in many of his series pieces.
-I attempted to mimic the style through the use of light and gentile shading -I created a border similar to his that was based off of line design and flowers -I attempted to mimic the positioning of the women in this piece with my sisters movements. -The flowers i used in this peice where based on O'Keeffe's petunia. This effected the colouring and shading choices of the flowers that I used in the boarder of the painting. |
ACT Questions:
1.) In my work I mimicked Muchas style through the subject matter and positioning. Also I used similar blending styles and floral border.
2.)
3.) In general this style of art was about highlighting how beautiful the models were. Although in this work Mucha was focusing on the different times of day in a series of panels.
4.)In his work it was focused not only on beauty, as that was more the art style, but also focused on the different times of day and the associations with each of them.
